A Visit to Ocracoke

You may be a first time visitor to Seven Cousins, or a repeat visitor who didn’t have a chance to take a ferry to Ocracoke the first time you were here.  Ocracoke is of scenic and historic interest and a center for artists and craftspeople. It is well worth a day or half-day trip.  You’ll notice long lines forming for the ferry at certain times, and you may be tempted, because of your proximity, to leave your vehicle behind and walk on. DON’T!

The ferry disembarks at the north end of the island, where there are no facilities except for restrooms. You’ll have about a 30 minute drive by car to the village centered around Silver Lake, not a lake at all, but a fine little harbor.  Here you will find The Ocracoke Lighthouse, cottages, hotels & B&Bs, restaurants, shops, a house museum, and the NPS welcome center, with some informative exhibits.  There is also another ferry terminal, for the longer ferries to Cedar Island and Swan Quarter. You can obtain a free map which outlines some historic sites on the island.

The ferry is free for passengers and vehicles, and, at times of heavy use, the ferry service does its best to add extra vessels and turn them around quickly.  They also have printed schedules for you, if you don’t find one in the cottage.  Ferries are basic.  The trip takes 30-40 minutes, and they have restrooms, but no food service except for vending machines.  If it is mealtime, it is advisable to take a picnic, especially if you have children, as it will be a while before food is available.  If you haven’t made your own sandwiches, you can pick them up across the street at the Marina.

Feeding the gulls is a favorite activity for families aboard the ferries, so you might want to save and bring along your scraps for this.  Proper etiquette is to go to the stern of the ferry to feed, to avoid having circling birds soil the heads and cars of fellow passengers!

A sunset ferry trip is lovely, if you can time your return correctly.
